Firstly, if you have a Will, well done.
The National Will Report has shown that nearly half of all adults in the UK do not have one so you are ahead of the game but, that does not mean you can become complacent.
A Will, like a house, needs to be maintained to make sure that it stays fit for purpose. That maintenance comes in the form of a Will review.
A Will review allows the solicitor, and the client, to look over the Will to make sure that everything is as it should be and there is no need for any changes. Here at SME, we do not charge to undertake a Will review, whether the Will was made at our firm or by another firm.
What is a Will review?
A Will review is an appointment with a solicitor to read through your existing Will and discuss whether it still reflects your wishes, your family circumstances, and any relevant legal or tax considerations.
The important thing for us is to ensure that any life events have been catered for in the Will. Births, deaths and marriages all affect how your Will should be drafted. Changes in the law, inheritance tax and the worry of care home fees can also be discussed at a Will review.
Common reasons to update a Will
The key goal is to ensure any life events have been catered for. A Will review is a good time to discuss:
- Births, deaths and marriages (these can affect who benefits and who should act as executors/guardians).
- Changes in the law.
- Inheritance tax planning.
- Planning for later-life care and the worry of care home fees.
