Opposite-sex couples should soon be able to enter into a civil partnership instead of marrying.

The House of Lords have approved regulations, which are intended to commence on 2 December, which would allow the first opposite-sex civil partnership to take place on 31 December, given the usual 28-day notice period.

It will be interesting to see whether unmarried people who currently live together in a heterosexual relationship will be interested in taking up this formal registration process.
