'Will' you want this Christmas present?

It’s that time of year when the weather gets colder, the nights darker and there is a definite feeling of winter looming.  Christmas decorations are being pulled from lofts and  mince pies are on the shelves.  Covid may have spoilt 2020 for most of us, but as a nation we are determined to try and enjoy Christmas!

How about this for a Christmas present?  A new will!  Before you fling the paper aside in disgust, have a think about what I am suggesting.  Over 55 per cent of people in England do not have a Will. That is a huge chunk of our population that have not dealt with where they would like their belongings to go.  They are merrily leaving the distribution of their house and savings, their cars and jewellery, their furniture and items of sentimental value, to intestacy law rather than their own choices. (Intestacy law is the system that decides who inherits what without a valid will in place).

Whilst a new will isn’t as exciting as a bottle of perfume or a sparkling diamond, there is no doubt of its importance, particularly in this new and different age we live in.  It’s vital that you are in control of where your assets go.  Recent research shows the pandemic has caused a massive spike in will enquiries, with law firms experiencing a 75 per cent increase in interest.

As a solicitor, I do understand that it is more tempting to leave making a will for another day, but as the pandemic has taught us, life is short.  Make that call today and then you can enjoy a relaxing Christmas, and you never know, you may end up on Santa’s nice list!
