Grieving Parents to have a New Leave Allowance

A Bill has been published this month which will entitle parents who lose a child who is under the age of eighteen years to two weeks’ paid leave.  At the moment, there is not a legal obligation upon employers to allow parents paid time off to grieve albeit that employers are expected to be understanding and flexible.

Under the Parental Bereavement (Pay and Leave) Bill, all employees will become entitled to parental bereavement leave regardless of their length of service.  Only those who have twenty six weeks’ continuous service however will also benefit from the Statutory Parental Bereavement Pay (as it is to be known), the cost of which will be able to be recovered from the Government by employers.
